Kinja'd!!!

It’s on ebay in Florida with a starting bid of $18k, BIN of $45k:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

This isn’t a BMW, it’s actually an Italian designed, Spanish built Iso Isetta, who came up with the original design. Iso licensed the design to BMW, who also bought the tooling. The design was also licensed to VELAM, a French company, and Romi, a Brazilian one. Iso Isettas were built in Spain, Italy, and Belgium. Italian built Iso Isettas are some of the most desirable Isettas; the Romi and Velam versions are just as rare, but less valuable.

A neighbor across the street owned a BMW Isetta, with the early canopy (like this one) and red with the “Z” stripe. He also daily’d a Nissan Pao. He was around for a couple of months and just vanished. Baltimore must’ve scared him off, that or my rabid, forceful attempts at friendship.

The price actually isn’t that far off. Isos go for way more than BMWs; only Velams go for more.

TBH, I’ve never been interested in Isettas, and I don’t understand why they command the prices they do. If I were to seek a true bubble car, I’d probably go for a Trojan 200.

The price is mostly about the badge; BMWs started skyrocketing in price at the same time as the Bruce Weiner auction, and the combination of the two brought Isettas up to ridiculous money. Since Isos and Velams are a similar design, their prices went up too.

There are many other German microcars I’d choose over an a BMW Isetta (Goggomobil, Heinkel Kabine, Messerschmitt, Zundapp Janus, Fuldamobil), but I’ve always wanted one, mostly because it was the first microcar I ever saw when I was a little kid.

They were already very expensive (relatively speaking) before that. They have a high kitsch factor, which had prices already pretty high in the 90s, whereas more conventional micros were worth little at that time. But kitsch doesn’t really do much for me.
